Amsterdamse Waterleidingduinen
We pre-treat two-thirds of Amsterdam's tap water in the Amsterdamse Waterleidingduinen. The dunes have been used for this purpose since 1853! You can enjoy great walks in this beautiful nature reserve. Or participate in wonderful excursions and activities.
The 'Amsterdamse Waterleidingduinen' are located between Zandvoort and Noordwijk. The area is approximately 5 kilometres wide and 10 kilometres long.
Water treatment
Every year we treat no less than 70 million cubic meters of water in these dunes. The water comes from the Rhine River. It is then pre-treated and pumped into the dunes.
The sand in the dunes further purifies the water in a natural way, it’s a natural filter. This process takes 3 months.
Finally, the water flows to the treatment facility at Leiduin. This is the last step in the treatment process and the water is now safe to drink.
